I think I had been watching my feet, or maybe it was the dark back side of my eye lids…I can’t really remember because I was so caught up in the excitement and emotion. But when I finally looked up I was blow away. Literally – blown away.

All strapped in, wind blowing through my hair, butterflies swarming around in my stomach a million miles a minute, and mountains as far as the eyes can see; I was paragliding. All I had to do was jog a few steps to get started and let the wind do the rest, but my legs were stuck…frozen. A few more deep breaths, that’s all I needed. “Vámanos” (let’s go) was the last word I heard before my legs instinctively began taking those big forward moving strides. We got to the edge and I thought my heart would jump from my chest before my legs would jump off that cliff; but then I didn’t have to. I was still running, but my feet were not touching the ground anymore. It was like I was gliding through a dream.

The first paragliding experience of my life could not have been in a more beautiful location. The Bariloche lake region of the Andes Mountains of Argentina has stunning views from all directions, but it is definitely best from above. I had talked with fellow travelers about their paragliding experiences in Bariloche and I was anxious to gain the aerial perspective of this area that I had heard about.

Victor was the Argentine flying guide who picked me up from Hostel 1004 with all his gear and preparations. The large windows of this beautiful hostel framed the scenery from the tenth floor of the highest building in the city. The views I had throughout my stay at this hostel foreshadowed the high-flying experience I would have before I left. On the morning I was scheduled to go, I noticed something new from the 10th floor – the clouds that had rolled in for the day. I was a little wary as to whether I should wait a day or two for them to clear up. While riding up to the take off spot in the passenger seat of Victor’s jeep I was informed that I could not have picked a better day. The clouds can obstruct the views a little, but with the clouds also comes a light wind that whips through the air, and whipped us through the sky. As soon as we were air borne I understood exactly what he meant.

On a day that the wind doesn’t make an appearance the paragliding experience is a beautiful, easy glide down to the bottom of the mountain; but on a day like this I was in for a little more excitement. My heart beat momentarily slowed after take off and I had a few moments to admire the landscape; but that didn’t last long. One big breeze swept us up from the side and before I knew it we were upside down and turning it circles. It was a roller coaster ride through the sky.

Looking down I almost forgot that I was attached to Victor whose professional experience provided me with the ride of my life. Just when I thought the wind had died and it was time to glide down to the bottom, a huge breeze would come out of nowhere and hold us in the air and send us in circles. The weather conditions were perfect. After twenty minutes of flying, Victor took us down to a graceful landing at the same spot I had to convince myself to leap from just moments before. My incredible retreat into the sky cost me 150 pesos but the experience was priceless.

Djalma Santos images

Djalma Santos
jalma Pereira Dias dos Santos known simply as Djalma Santos (also spelled Dejalma Santos, born 27 February 1929 in São Paulo, Brazil) is a Brazilian former football player who started for the Brazil national team in four World Cups, winning two, in 1958 and 1962. Santos is considered to be one of the greatest right-backs of all time. While primarily known for his defensive skills, he often ventured upfield and displayed some impressive attacking skills.

Along with Franz Beckenbauer, he is one of only two players to be included into three FIFA World Cup All Star teams (in 1954, 1958 and 1962). He was named by Pelé as one of the top 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004.

long jump
Long Jump is a very popular event in track. It is a lot of fun and easy to learn. There is a factor of natural ability, some people can naturally jump further than others, but there are many ways to improve as a long jumper.

The diagram below shows the jumping part of long jump. However, the approach to the sand pit is just as important as the jump itself. Each jump is measured from the end of a board on the runway. No matter where you jump from, the ref measures from the same spot. Therefore, it is very important to jump as close to the edge of the board as possible. You do not want to go over the board though because they won't count your jump if you do. As you can probably imagine, it is very difficult to run at a full sprint and consistently take off from the same spot on the runway, but that is precisely what long jump is all about.

Long jumpers mark the runway at their starting location. This spot is different for each jumper. You can find your starting point by:

1. standing at the pit end of the runway with the back of your jumping leg's heal on the edge of the board.
2. Sprint as fast as you can away from the pit. Have someone count your steps and mark your 9th, 11th, and 13th steps if you jump off of the opposite leg you start running with. (If you jump off of the same leg as your starting leg, have your helper mark off the 10th, 12th, and 14th steps).
3. Practice starting your approach from each of these marks and pick the one that you feel gets you to your peek speed by the time you hit the board.

When you have practiced your approach to the pit enough that you are consistently coming within centimeters of the edge of the board, you should practice the jumping part of long jump. It is easier to work on long jump form from just a couple of steps back from the board since it is tiring to sprint the whole approach over and over again.

The diagram above shows the form for a long jump after the take off. When you do a long jump you want to jump up, not out towards the pit. The reason the approach is so important is that the speed you get on the runway is what is going to carry you out over the pit. What you want to do when you are jumping is to jump as high as you can and let your momentum carry you forward. The higher you jump, the longer you are in the air, the longer your momentum can carry you further, and the longer your jump ends up being. The steps for the long jump are as follows.

1. Plant your jumping foot on the board and bend your knee.
2. When you are jumping, drive upwards with the other knee and rotate your arm back and around on the same side as the knee.
3. Once you are in the air, you want to rotate your other arm back and around. Also, you want to keep both of your legs bent back behind you as long as you can.
4. When you begin to come down from the jump, swing your legs quickly in front of you.
5. As soon as your heals hit the sand, throw your arms in front of you so your momentum carries you forward. You get measured from the spot you touch closest to the board, so you don't want to fall backwards behind your feet
